Perpetual Planet Everest Expedition
360 VIDEO
A 360 degree video
The earth’s climate is rapidly changing, and as part of a robust effort to improve our understanding and resilience to the impacts of climate change on mountain systems, National Geographic conducted the most comprehensive single scientific expedition to Mount Everest between April and June 2019.
The team at IVAR Studios documented the expedition and produced a two-part series about the work and science being performed. The series premiered in 2020.
The two-part VR/360 series produced from Mt Everest was nominated and won two categories of the 2021 Webby Awards.

“Working with Martin and the team at IVAR has been both a joy and an honor. In addition to the incredible technical skills, creative vision, and reliable execution they bring to the table, the IVAR team is also a pleasure to work with. They are open communicators, excellent problem-solvers, and together we’ve created award-winning, immersive impact films for the National Geographic Society, introducing audiences to people and places they may never otherwise have the opportunity to learn from. I truly can’t wait for our next collaboration.”

The IVAR team joined the Perpetual Planet expedition working with the teams of scientists and storytellers, documenting their work in 360-degree media during two months in Nepal.
The two-part series was produced and directed by co-founder Martin Edström, and the work was innovative. Due to the harsh environment and drone restrictions, the team had to think of other ways of continuing the story, and thus photogrammetry together with 360 video was used to visualize the mountain.
The work has been widely used in different VR settings and online and won two Webby awards in two different categories as well as first place in the National Press Photographer’s Associations (NPPA) annual competition Best of Photojournalism online visual presentation – innovation.
