The Door

A portal to a refugee camp

The project

Millions of people live in refugee camps on the run from terror, war, and poverty, which is an everyday hard to imagine.

To raise awareness and understanding of the life situations of children on the run, we, together with Plan International Sweden, developed a concept to let you enter a refugee camp through a portal – using AR.

By putting a blue door in the middle of Sergel’s Square in Stockholm, we gave passers the opportunity of entering this doorway and a digital AR portal stepping straight into a refugee camp in Nyarugusu, Tanzania.

Plan International

A door to another world through AR

Increased awareness about the refugee crisis

Our process

The project was developed from the virtual reality production My New Home that let fifth graders step into a refugee camp with the help of VR head mounts. But we wanted to create a way for people to experience the refugee camp and the refugee’s daily lives without using a VR headset.

Our solution was to put a blue door in the middle of Sweden’s busiest plazas creating an attention-grabbing event, allowing anyone to open the door to a portal and a split-second journey to the refugee camp n Tanzania using augmented reality.

Results

The app created for the event on Sergels Square was released on both iOS and Android platforms, and Plan International still uses the app and the interactive virtual tour My New Home as an impactful piece to discuss the refugee crisis in schools. The work was featured in Resume, one of Sweden’s top magazines about mass media and marketing communications.
